Both teams, though, aren’t quite up to contender form to this point in the season. Theย 49ersย have been ravaged with injuries throughout the season, the latest blow coming to their wide receiver corps.ย Brandon Aiyuk will miss the remainder of the seasonย with a brutal knee injury, whileย Deebo Samuel was hospitalizedย while dealing with a bout of pneumonia.

Kyle Posey is the Senior Producer at Niners Nation and has covered the 49ers since 2019. Kyle was an FCS wide receiver in college and has coached high school football for 8+ years. He’s written for several sites and appeared on numerous podcasts. His extensive football history, paired with an accounting background, helps Kyle take an analytical and statistical approach to breaking down and covering the Niners.

Theย Cowboysย have dealt with their fair share of injuries, but their issues go beyond who’s not on the field. Head coach Mike McCarthy has drawn the ire of Dallas fans this season, as the team, particularly its defense, hasn’t quite played up to expectations. Enteringย Week 8, the Cowboys are fielding the 31st-ranked scoring defense, putting major heat under both McCarthy and new Dallas defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer.

The San Francisco 49ers were always going to every bag of tricks from the Cowboys off a bye week, and they faced one before the first play from scrimmage. The Cowboys opened the game with trickeration on the opening kickoff return. There was a penalty on the play.

Dallas picked up one first down before Fred Warner stopped the Cowboys on 3rd & 5. Whenever you get a three-and-out to begin the game, confidence levels soar through the roof.

Ricky Pearsall caught the first pass of the game for the Niners, then had an illegal procedure penalty on third down. That set up a 3rd & 6, and Kyle Shanahan dialed up a gem of a call. Deebo Samuel was lined up in the backfield, motioned onto linebacker Eric Kendricks, and ran right by him for a gain of 47 yards.

However, a holding penalty on Kyle Juszczyk prevented the offense from reaching the red zone, which meant an Anders Carlson field goal. Carlsonโ€™s kick was good from 50 yards out, giving the Niners a 3-0 lead.

The defense did not force a punt on the ensuing possessions. After they allowed two first downs, Nick Bosa hit Dak Prescott as he was throwing, and Jiโ€™Ayir Brown fielded the throw as if it were a punt for an interception.

The 49ers took over, backed up in their territory, but Jordan Mason was injured on first down. According to the broadcast, Mason said, โ€œIโ€™m good,โ€ so the hope was the injury wasnโ€™t serious.

After a first down throw to George Kittle, Purdy missed Jacob Cowing on a third down which led to a punt.

On Dallasโ€™s third drive, the 49ers drew two holding calls on one play. Fred Warner forced a fumble on 3rd & 10, but the Cowboys recovered it. A 12-yard run moved the chains for Dallas.

Now, coming off a bye week, fans and analysts alike will witness whether the time off was beneficial for Dallas’ playoff push or if the devastatingly injured 49ers can take advantage of a reeling Cowboys squad on national TV.

Cowboys 10, 49ers 3: Brandon Aubrey extends Dallas’ lead

Brandon Aubrey connected on a 29-yard field goal attempt to cap an eight-play, 46-yard scoring drive that put the Cowboys up seven with three and a half minutes left in the first half.

Aubrey missed practice in the week leading up to Sunday night’s game due to jury duty.

Jordan Mason questionable to return with shoulder injury

Out of the two-minute warning, NBC’s broadcast showed Mason heading back to the 49ers’ locker room with medical personnel. He is being evaluated for a shoulder injury and is questionable to return.

In the meantime, rookie Isaac Guerendo will take over as San Francisco’s lead tailback.
